Across South Africa, young people are transforming their futures through delivery platforms like Mr D and Uber Moto — powered by initiatives such as the Exxaro Programme, which provide training, skills, and income support.

One of these inspiring journeys is that of David Mashidi, whose determination and hard work turned his life around.

My Journey: From Lephalale to a New Beginning

My name is David Mashidi, and I come from Lephalale, a small town where opportunities are few and far between. I grew up in a tough environment, raised by my single mother alongside my two siblings. From a young age, I worked small jobs to help support my family, determined to create a better future.

Everything changed when I joined the Exxaro Programme. Through the stipend I received, I was able to support my family while gaining valuable training and life skills. The programme didn’t just provide education — it built my confidence and opened the door to real employment.

Finding Freedom Through Delivery Work

After completing my training, I joined Mr D as a delivery driver. For the first time, I was earning between R3,000 and R4,000 a week, which meant I could bring home close to R12,000 a month, plus my stipend. This income transformed my life and helped me provide for my family in ways I never could before.

In June 2025, I decided to expand my journey by joining Uber Moto, where I now earn around R2,000 a week. The freedom and consistency of delivery work have allowed me to grow, plan for the future, and live with dignity.

The Power of Opportunity

The Exxaro Programme gave me a strong foundation — not only to earn an income but to believe in myself again. It showed me that when young South Africans are given real opportunities, they can build sustainable careers and support their families.

To the youth out there, my message is simple:

“Don’t listen to people who say motorbikes are unsafe. A bike is like a car — if you respect it and drive responsibly, it will serve you well.”

Delivery work is not just a job — it’s a pathway to independence, financial freedom, and self-respect. Many young South Africans say there are no jobs, yet foreigners are thriving in this same industry. The truth is, there are opportunities everywhere — we just need to take them.

A Message of Gratitude

I’m deeply grateful to Exxaro for believing in young people like me. It’s because of this programme that I can now stand on my own and help my family. I truly hope more companies and organisations continue to invest in South Africa’s youth, because when young people are empowered, entire communities thrive.

From Struggle to Success: How Exxaro Helped Me Build a Better Future Empowering South Africa’s Youth Through Real Delivery Opportunities At Lularides, we believe in sharing real stories that prove how access to the right opportunities can change lives.
